Dr. Patricia McMahon, PsyD
Patricia McMahon, PsyD
Licensed Psychologist (Illinois: 071.004775)

Overview
Individuals work with me to better understand what interferes with their happiness: difficulties meeting academic, career, or personal goals; trouble sustaining rewarding relationships; struggles stemming from traumatic experience; or strong mixed feelings when facing decisions. Sometimes the loss of an important relationship, job, home or pet is the focus of counseling. During the psychotherapy process, clients identify and explore how to maximize their strengths, while also seeking to better understand their difficulties in order to develop approaches to improve their relationships and life.

After discussing the issues that brought a client to schedule an appointment, the therapy process varies per person. Most often the process focuses on client relationships, interactions, identifying emotions and understanding motivation. Understanding the intersection of feelings, thoughts, and behavior increases client control in life.

Thus, over time we will explore how your background and circumstances could be intertwined with these very current issues. My goal is that your counseling is an integrative process that focuses on specific issues but also how these issues impact other parts of your life. We will have "check-ins" periodically throughout counseling to discuss what is helpful, or what has stalled progress.

I provide services to individuals between the ages of 18 and 60. I have experience with many issues from my work in private practice, university counseling centers, a hospital, and a forensic agency. My varied experience helps me work with each individual's complexity and uniqueness. My approach integrates psychodynamic, relational and cognitive interventions appropriate to what each individual discusses with me.
